I like the fact that Filipino videos are always made to look as it was stuck in the past, with the glories of the wooden Filipino-Spanish homes are featured, with the rustic feel of a hacienda in the city-setting and images of saints and elaborated altars are depicted.
It's look grand, but a bit scary for me. (Photo from Philippine Travel Guide)
I am not daring enough to tell people (Western) about the peculiarities of the Filipino culture, specifically about the spiritual realm. For some odd reason, enchanted beings called engkantos, mythical creatures that take in beastly forms and restless ghosts coexist with the citizens of this republic.
I think it may have something to do with the influx of many religions in the past, the pagan practices and the overly strict Catholic rites. I never get how sorrowful and eerie the Catholic churches feel inside it. Seeing life-size statues of saints in their serene faces terrifies me. Especially the ceramic statues simulacrum of a dead Jesus, or the one that is covered with blood and is carrying a cross. As well as the overly dressed Virgin Mary in silk fabric, with gems and stones on it. Old women with black veils covering their grey hair and wrinkled face-- scary sight.
Wtf are you doing, boys? (Photo taken from Google Images)
I think it's a good identity for the Filipinos, being God-fearing and religious; however, I don't think if people still know what they are doing about or it also just became like a pagan practice itself. I don't want to put down any religion or anything, but that's just my opinion.

Furthermore, I am actually convinced about all these supernatural occurrences. I hear them all the time, usually from old people. I don't think they'll still want to try to scare people my age. You can see the honesty from every word uttered. My mum (kinda) grew up in this mystical island called Bohol, and whenever I come to visit, bizarre stories from people who lives there never ends. I thought to myself why they'd never gotten used to it, or why didn't they leave the place.
I guess that's just how the Philippines is really is. They say, it's where the lost Kingdom of Lemuria sits, and I am intrigued about these stories. When I was younger, I remember watching docus with re-enactments of these. They scared the shi-load out of me. I think that's how Filipinos roll, they believe in God faithfully so the evil wants to lure them to their side by distracting them. I also had good stories to tell: like seeing shadow people with smiles, broken radio in a haunted car turning on, tuning in and ends with a diabolic laughter to scare three little children, and all others. Don't worry, I'm not delusional, I have other people to vouch that for me.
Going back, yes! This film is superb. You can actually see the work that has been put on this! The concept is possibly bases from a true story or something (especially that the crime rate in that country is high, plus you get these psycho stories all the time). It had symbolic shots and the technique is truly professional. I am not a critique or what, but just watch it yourself and agree with me.
Happy Halloween World, Good All Saints and Soul's Day Philippines!
